Pakistan Railways earned a profit of Rs. 2.41 billion in 2024-25, the Ministry of Railways told the National Assembly, marking the second consecutive year the state-run entity has remained in the black.
In a written reply submitted during Question Hour, the ministry said Pakistan Railways posted revenue of Rs. 93.60 billion against expenditures of Rs. 91.18 billion during the fiscal year.
The ministry said this was the first time in the department’s history that Pakistan Railways had recorded profits for two straight years. It added that the institution has now moved into profitable territory after posting a loss of Rs. 8.46 billion two years earlier.
According to the written response, the turnaround was driven by a notable increase in overall earnings, particularly from passenger and freight operations.
Higher income from both segments helped improve the railway department’s financial position and pushed its total revenue beyond Rs. 93 billion for the first time.
The ministry said the latest figures show Pakistan Railways’ finances have started to stabilize after years of losses.
However, it added that steps are still being taken to further strengthen the institution’s financial footing and improve its long-term sustainability.
