An opposition Member of the National Assembly (MNA) has suggested that IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja should have the first telecom tower installed at her own residence as a symbolic start to the implementation of the controversial Telecom Infrastructure bill.

The remark was made during a parliamentary session while debating legislation that would allow telecom companies to install towers on private property. Under the proposed law which is for now stuck at Senate, refusal to permit installation could result in a penalty of up to Rs. 5 crore.

In a sarcastic comment directed at the bill, the lawmaker said that if such rules are enforced, the first tower should logically be placed at the IT minister’s home.

Everyone laughed on the floor of the House.

The bill, which has already been approved by the National Assembly, is now awaiting consideration in the Senate. It has faced criticism from lawmakers over concerns related to private property rights and regulatory overreach.
