OpenAI has officially launched the GPT-5.6 family of AI models, introducing three new variants—GPT-5.6 Sol, GPT-5.6 Terra, and GPT-5.6 Luna. The models are now rolling out across ChatGPT, Codex, and the OpenAI API, with global availability expanding over the next 24 hours. The new lineup is designed to improve coding, reasoning, knowledge work, cybersecurity, scientific research, and computer use while offering better performance and efficiency.
The GPT-5.6 family consists of three models targeting different use cases. GPT-5.6 Sol is OpenAI’s flagship model, designed for the highest level of performance. GPT-5.6 Terra provides a balance between capability and cost for everyday tasks, while GPT-5.6 Luna is the company’s fastest and most affordable model.
OpenAI says the naming reflects permanent capability tiers, allowing each model to evolve independently in future updates.
According to OpenAI, GPT-5.6 Sol establishes new performance benchmarks across coding, professional knowledge work, cybersecurity, and scientific research while using fewer tokens than previous models. The company says this results in stronger performance per dollar by reducing the total cost required to complete complex tasks.
OpenAI also introduced two advanced reasoning modes. The max mode gives the model more time to reason through difficult problems, while ultra coordinates four AI agents in parallel to complete demanding tasks more quickly.
OpenAI describes GPT-5.6 Sol as its strongest coding model to date. The company says it achieves state-of-the-art performance on several independent coding benchmarks while reducing token usage, execution time, and operating costs compared with previous models.
The GPT-5.6 family can also write and execute lightweight programs, coordinate external tools, process intermediate results, monitor progress, and determine the next step automatically. Developers can use these capabilities through Programmatic Tool Calling in the Responses API.
Beyond software development, GPT-5.6 improves professional knowledge work by creating polished presentations, documents, spreadsheets, and interactive visualizations. The model can also inspect rendered outputs, identify visual issues, and refine designs before delivering completed work.
OpenAI says GPT-5.6 delivers significant gains in cybersecurity evaluations, helping users perform secure code reviews, patch vulnerabilities, threat modeling, malware analysis, and defensive security testing.
The company also reports improved performance in biology, chemistry, and life sciences while maintaining safeguards intended to prevent misuse. OpenAI says the models remain below its “Critical” capability threshold for both cybersecurity and biology.
GPT-5.6 is available starting today across ChatGPT, Codex, and the OpenAI API.
ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users can access GPT-5.6 Sol through medium and higher reasoning settings, while Pro and Enterprise subscribers also gain access to GPT-5.6 Sol Pro. Free and Go users receive GPT-5.6 Terra through ChatGPT Work and Codex.
Developers can access all three models through the OpenAI API.
The API also introduces improved prompt caching and beta support for multi-agent workflows. This placement mirrors how technology publications present benchmark data, making the article easier to follow while keeping each table next to the section that discusses it.
