OpenAI has sharply reduced API prices for its GPT-5.6 Luna and Terra models after improving the efficiency of the systems used to operate them.
The price cuts took effect on July 30, only three weeks after the GPT-5.6 family became generally available on July 9. GPT-5.6 Sol, the most powerful model in the lineup, remains unchanged.
GPT-5.6 Luna, the fastest and cheapest model in the family, now costs 80% less. Its input price has fallen from $1 to $0.20 per million tokens, while output pricing has dropped from $6 to $1.20 per million tokens.
GPT-5.6 Terra has received a 20% reduction. It now costs $2 per million input tokens and $12 per million output tokens, down from $2.50 and $15, respectively.
OpenAI said the lower prices resulted from improvements to its models, inference systems, hardware usage, production software and context management. The company said GPT-5.6 Sol also helped optimize production systems, reducing its serving costs by 20% and improving token-generation efficiency by more than 15%.
OpenAI is also introducing a new Fast mode for GPT-5.6 Sol in the API.
It replaces Priority Processing and can provide speeds up to 2.5 times faster than standard processing. Fast mode costs twice the standard API price but does not change the model’s intelligence.
ChatGPT and Codex subscription prices and usage budgets remain unchanged. However, Terra and Luna will now consume fewer credits in ChatGPT Work and Codex because of their lower prices.
