Nvidia on Monday unveiled its new RTX Spark chip for consumer Windows laptops and desktops, marking its first move into fully integrated consumer chips as it looks to compete with Intel, AMD, Apple, and Qualcomm.
Chief Executive Jensen Huang introduced the RTX Spark laptop during his keynote at Computex in Taipei, where he said Nvidia and Microsoft are working together to “reinvent the PC.”
Nvidia has sold consumer laptop and desktop GPUs for decades, but those systems had to use Intel or AMD CPUs. RTX Spark changes that because it uses Nvidia’s own custom CPU, developed in collaboration with MediaTek.
The chip is based on ARM architecture, the same type of technology used in Apple’s M series chips and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Elite processors.
Nvidia said RTX Spark is a smaller version of the chips it uses in its AI supercomputers. The company said the chip can run personal AI agents locally, along with popular games and productivity software such as Adobe Photoshop.
During the keynote, Huang showed RTX Spark laptops running the new James Bond game 007 First Light and racing title Forza Horizon 6 .
He also showed a Mac Mini-sized desktop powered by the same chip.
Nvidia did not announce a specific launch date, but said RTX Spark-powered computers will arrive this fall.
The devices will be made by several PC manufacturers, including ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Microsoft, and MSI.
Nvidia did not share pricing, but a senior company official told The Wall Street Journal that RTX Spark PCs will sit at the premium end of the market.
The company and Microsoft have not released specific performance figures or direct comparisons with Apple, AMD, or Intel-based laptops.
Mark Aevermann, Nvidia’s senior director of product management, told The Verge that RTX Spark laptops will offer all-day battery life and manage battery power better than any previous laptop using Nvidia RTX GPUs.
Aevermann said the GPU will be comparable to Nvidia’s current mid-range RTX 5070 mobile graphics processor, while the CPU will be competitive with other Windows PC rivals.
Nvidia said RTX Spark laptops will support up to 128 GB of memory, matching the memory capacity available on Apple’s highest-end MacBook Pro models.
Huang said the role of personal computers could change in the same way phones changed over time. He said people now use phones for almost everything except phone calls, and he expects the PC of the future to look very different from today’s version.
He also said he could imagine a future where homes have AI supercomputers, comparing the idea with common household machines such as lawnmowers and dishwashers.
Nvidia shares rose 1.64% to $214.60 in early Monday premarket trading after the company showed RTX Spark alongside other data center computers and tools.
ARM Holdings shares climbed 8.69% to $384.83 in premarket trading, as RTX Spark’s CPU uses ARM-based architecture.
Qualcomm shares fell 6.38% to $235.03. Qualcomm makes the only other ARM-based chip for Windows laptops.
Intel and AMD, the two largest Windows laptop chipmakers, also moved lower in early trading. Intel shares fell 2.83%, while AMD shares declined 3.12%.
