Iran’s Parliament Speaker and ex-Brigadier General of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf on Wednesday issued a strongly worded statement that any potential ceasefire will be possible if the US lifts its “maritime blockade” at Hormuz and all the “Zionist warmongering across all fronts” ceases to exist.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Ghalibaf said a complete ceasefire would only be meaningful if it is not violated by continued restrictions on maritime trade and the “hostage-taking of the world’s economy.”
He further argued that reopening the Strait of Hormuz would be “impossible” under the ongoing breaches of the ceasefire agreement. The only ceasefire this war saw was officially signed and mediated in Islamabad with the help of Pakistan’s top leadership.
Ghalibaf also stated that recent military pressure had failed to achieve its objectives. He said “bullying” would not succeed against Iran and the only viable path forward was recognition of the rights of the Iranian nation.
Almost 18 hours earlier, US President Donald Trump announced a last-minute extension to the ceasefire. While all attacks were halted, maritime sources have confirmed that the US naval fleet has yet to lift its blockade of Iranian ports and the Hormuz chokepoint.
