New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani will not attend the city’s annual Israel Day Parade on Sunday, breaking with a long-running tradition followed by every mayor since 1964.

The decision has drawn attention because Mamdani has continued to appear at several major cultural and religious events across the city since taking office.

In recent months, he has attended the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade, Lunar New Year celebrations, Eid prayers in Brooklyn, and the Sikh Day Parade in Manhattan.

His absence from the Israel Day Parade is therefore likely to come under closer scrutiny, especially as the event remains one of the city’s most prominent annual public gatherings.

The parade is scheduled to take place on Sunday and is expected to draw thousands of attendees under tight security arrangements.

While mayors have historically maintained a presence at the event for decades, Mamdani’s decision means that tradition will be broken this year.
