The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has conducted its first large-scale search and rescue simulation exercise to strengthen disaster response and improve coordination among agencies nationwide.

The drill took place at the National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC) in Islamabad, focusing on building an integrated system to manage emergencies and natural hazards effectively.

Officials said the exercise was organized in view of the upcoming monsoon risks, particularly flooding. The NEOC used advanced weather forecasting tools, satellite monitoring, and early warning systems to enhance preparedness.

Held under the International Search and Rescue Advisory Group framework, the simulation brought together multiple agencies, including Rescue 1122, civil defence units, armed forces, and federal and provincial institutions, along with volunteers.

Authorities replicated various emergency scenarios, including glacial lake outburst floods in Gilgit-Baltistan, large-scale flooding, and earthquake situations in Islamabad and Muzaffarabad.

Participants evaluated response times, coordination, and preparedness, highlighting the need for better communication, faster information sharing, and a unified command system.

Officials also stressed the critical role of community volunteers during emergencies.

The NDMA chairman called for greater public awareness through timely information and urged authorities to address gaps in response mechanisms.

Officials reaffirmed their commitment to conducting such exercises regularly, noting that a strong and coordinated disaster management system is essential to minimise the impact of natural disasters.
