A parliamentary committee has expressed concern over the different legal marriage ages set by the federal and provincial governments and directed the Ministry of Human Rights to work with all provinces to establish a uniform marriage age across Pakistan.
The directive came during a meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Human Rights, chaired by MNA Asiya Naz Tanoli.
The committee appreciated the Ministry of Human Rights for successfully hosting the 9th OIC Ministerial Conference on Women in Islamabad, saying it would help promote women’s socioeconomic empowerment, digital inclusion, and political participation.
The committee also expressed concern over the poor performance of ministries and departments responsible for curbing social evils due to weak coordination among relevant institutions. Members observed that policies largely remained on paper and lacked effective implementation at the grassroots level.
The committee directed the Ministry of Human Rights to improve coordination among relevant ministries and departments to help curb social evils, including rape, harassment, child abuse, drug abuse, and begging.
It also asked the ministry to launch a strong public awareness campaign highlighting its services to improve public awareness and enhance the performance of the relevant departments.
