The Senate Standing Committee on Communications has reportedly directed the Motorway Police not to check citizens’ marriage certificates.
Committee Chairman Senator Pervaiz Rashid expressed concern over the practice during the meeting on Wednesday.
The committee met under the chairmanship of Senator Pervaiz Rashid to review matters related to the National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP).
During the meeting, Senator Saifullah Abro strongly objected to an NHMP handout and sought an explanation over the inclusion of senators’ names in the document. He questioned how the Motorway Police had concluded that recovered items were linked to specific senators.
Responding to the committee, the Inspector General of the Motorway Police said the department’s responsibility was to take legal action where required and not to comment on any individual or institution.
Senator Pervaiz Rashid said the Motorway Police enjoys a strong public reputation that should be protected. Referring to reports of officers checking marriage certificates, he questioned under whose authority such checks were being carried out.
“The Motorway Police is a responsible institution. In the future, make sure no one’s marriage certificate is checked,” the committee chairman directed.
