The Lahore High Court has ruled that under the Punjab Child Marriage Restraint Act 2026, the marriage of a girl below the age of 18 is illegal.
The court issued the order while hearing a petition filed by Muhammad Aslam, who sought registration of a case against the alleged husband of his minor daughter, Hina Aslam.
It directed that Hina be kept at the Child Protection and Welfare Bureau and set aside an order of a Justice of Peace that had rejected the request for registration of a case.
The court also directed police to carry out a fresh investigation into evidence allegedly showing that the girl had been subjected to child marriage.
The petitioner had said that a case over the alleged abduction of his daughter had already been registered.
He argued that new evidence had emerged regarding her underage marriage and that further legal action was needed against those involved.
The court observed that laws against child marriage are meant to protect the rights, safety and welfare of children.
