England defeated New Zealand by 115 runs in the first Test at Lord’s to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, a result that caused a major shift in the ICC World Test Championship ( WTC ) 2025-27 points table.

The match was dominated by bowlers, with both batting lineups struggling on a difficult Lord’s surface. England were bowled out for 140 in their first innings before New Zealand managed only 113 in reply.

England improved in their second innings and scored 226, setting New Zealand a target of 254 runs. However, the visitors collapsed again and were bowled out for 138, handing England a comfortable 115-run victory.

Gus Atkinson played a key role for England with the ball, finishing with 5 for 30 in New Zealand’s second innings. The win helped England move to 50 points in the World Test Championship table, although they remained seventh with a points percentage of 37.88.

New Zealand, meanwhile, dropped to fourth place after suffering their first defeat of the current WTC cycle. The Black Caps now have 28 points from four matches, with two wins, one defeat and one draw, giving them a points percentage of 58.33.

Australia remain on top of the table with 84 points and a points percentage of 87.50 after winning seven of their first eight matches. South Africa sit second with 36 points and a points percentage of 75.00, while Sri Lanka are third with 16 points and 66.67.

Bangladesh are fifth with 28 points and a points percentage of 58.33, level with New Zealand but behind them on tiebreakers. India remain sixth with 52 points and 48.15.

Pakistan continue to sit in eighth place with only four points from four matches. They have won one and lost three so far, leaving them with a points percentage of 8.33. West Indies are at the bottom with four points and a points percentage of 4.17.
