Heavy rains triggered landslides and mudflows that blocked key roads in Gilgit-Baltistan on Wednesday, leaving a large number of travelers stranded.

According to local authorities and the Gilgit-Baltistan Disaster Management Authority (GBDMA), the Karakoram Highway was closed to traffic after landslides and falling debris hit multiple locations between Gunar Farm and Lal Padi in the Chilas area of Diamer.

Officials said the National Highway Authority and other concerned agencies are carrying out debris removal and road clearance operations. Travelers have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and check road conditions before departure.

The road closures resulted in long queues of vehicles on both sides of the highway, disrupting travel to and from Gilgit-Baltistan.

Meanwhile, the Baltistan Road was also blocked after landslides occurred near Maloopa in Skardu’s Roundu area, according to the GBDMA. Authorities said efforts are underway to reopen the route, but passengers traveling to and from Baltistan remained stranded for several hours.

The disruptions come as the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has warned of possible flooding in parts of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Balochistan between June 16 and June 19.
