The listing includes the three remote valleys of Bumburate, Birir, and Ramboor, home to the indigenous Kalasha community, which has preserved its distinct polytheistic religion, traditions, and way of life for centuries.

According to UNESCO guidelines, inclusion in the Tentative List is a prerequisite for nomination to the official World Heritage List, making this development a crucial milestone.

Dr Abdul Samad, Director General of Archaeology and Museums, called the move a significant achievement in preserving both the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the Kalasha people. He noted that efforts to secure this recognition had been underway for over a decade.

He explained that the next step involves submitting a detailed dossier, including bylaws and preservation strategies, to advance toward full World Heritage status.

The recognition places the Kalash cultural landscape on the global map, highlighting its more than 140 ceremonial sites, traditional villages, ritual platforms, and ancestral graveyards with distinctive wooden carvings.

UNESCO described the Kalasha cultural system as an “exceptionally well-preserved living indigenous heritage,” where traditions, festivals, music, dances, and social structures remain actively practised and deeply connected to the natural landscape.

Officials believe the listing will help strengthen conservation efforts, promote sustainable tourism, and support community development while safeguarding the identity of one of the world’s most unique indigenous cultures.
