A Pakistan cargo aircraft operating from Sharjah to Karachi went missing on Tuesday night after reporting a navigational system issue, prompting an extensive search and rescue operation, according to the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA).
The K2 Airways Boeing 737 cargo flight, en route from Sharjah to Karachi, reported a navigational system malfunction at 9:18 pm PST. The aircraft was immediately assisted by Karachi Area Control Center (ACC).
However, just three minutes later, at 9:21 pm PST, air traffic controllers observed the aircraft rapidly descending on radar while making a sudden change in heading. Moments later, both radar contact and communication with the aircraft were lost approximately 155 nautical miles west of Karachi.
Following the incident, the Pakistan Airports Authority activated the Rescue Coordination Centre (RCC) and launched a search and rescue operation over the Arabian Sea in coordination with multiple agencies to locate the missing aircraft.
According to the PAA, there were five crew members on board the cargo plane.
