## Japan Suspends Indian Mango Imports After Inspection Finds Facility Deficiencies

Japan has suspended imports of Indian mangoes for the first time in nearly two decades after inspectors identified deficiencies at a key treatment facility in northern India.

The decision follows an inspection of a vapour heat treatment (VHT) facility in Uttar Pradesh, where Japanese officials reportedly found shortcomings in fumigation and disinfection procedures. The VHT process is designed to protect exported mangoes from pests and fruit fly larvae.

Following the inspection, the Yokohama Plant Protection Association announced that mango shipments certified after March 25, 2026, would not be accepted until Indian facilities comply with Japan’s quarantine standards.

The suspension affects several popular Indian mango varieties, including Alphonso, Kesar, Langra, and Banganapalli. Exporters have voiced concern over the decision, arguing that the action impacts the entire industry despite issues being identified at a specific facility.

According to Indian government data, exports of fresh and processed mango products to Japan were valued at approximately $1.54 million during 2025-26. Gujarat’s Kesar mango accounted for the largest share of exports to the Japanese market.

Industry representatives say the ban comes at a difficult time, as exporters are already facing higher freight costs, shipping delays, and shortages of refrigerated containers linked to ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

The Indian government has not yet officially responded to the suspension. However, Ali, president of the Mango Growers Association of India, said discussions with Japanese authorities were ongoing and that industry representatives had been “promised some solution” regarding the issue.

This is the first suspension of Indian mango imports by Japan since restrictions imposed in 1986 over fruit fly concerns were lifted in 2006 after India strengthened its treatment and pest-control measures.
