Italy has suspended its Schengen agreement with Spain, with Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani calling the move unavoidable and necessary to protect national security and Europe’s borders.
In a post on X, Tajani said the temporary suspension was meant to safeguard citizens and respond to growing concern over migrant inflows through Ceuta, the Spanish territory on the Moroccan coast.

He said the situation showed that border management is a shared responsibility across the European Union and warned that uncontrolled migration flows could increase security risks, including terrorism.
The issue quickly became part of wider political debate across Europe and the United States. US President Donald Trump and his allies used the migration crisis in Spain to attack rival political forces and warn against what they described as open-border policies.

Trump said the scenes in Ceuta could become a warning for the United States if the “wrong side” wins future elections. His vice president, JD Vance, described the migration surge as evidence of “radical left-wing globalist policies.”

Far-right leaders in Europe also seized on the crisis. Alternative for Germany co-leader Alice Weidel said the situation in Ceuta highlighted the need for tighter borders and stricter deportation policies.

Right-wing leaders in Italy, Finland and the Czech Republic also backed tougher action, with some calling for Spain to be excluded from Europe’s visa-free zone.
The migration crisis in Ceuta has become a flashpoint in the broader European debate over border security, asylum policy and the political impact of irregular migration.
