A major Indian tech startup, AI+, has been caught lying about its India-only smartphone claims.
The startup, founded by former Realme CEO Madhav Sheth, claims to produce smartphones made entirely in India. Everything, including the software, hardware, and even the apps are claimed to be created in India. However, multiple YouTubers, including the highly popular content creator ‘Mrwhosetheboss’, have found these claims to be false.
The controversy came to light when Indian YouTubers TechWiser and GyanTherapy discovered Chinese-made apps, software similarities, and an Android skin that looks awfully similar to Realme. Even the hardware seemed to have been provided by a Chinese ODM manufacturer, Sprocomm.
Pre-installed apps like Clean Assistant, Phone Clone, and Mobile Butler were identified as Chinese-built, with privacy policies linked to Sprocomm Technologies.
Videos from these YouTubers were forcibly taken down with legal pressure once AI+ secured a Delhi High Court injunction against these content creators, restricting any criticism. The brand allegedly used a “John Doe” defendant to avoid notifying the creators before the injunction and sent legal notices to nonexistent email addresses, effectively suppressing negative coverage during product launch windows
This is when the issue gained international attention from the highly popular UK YouTuber Mrwhosetheboss.
In his video, he uncovered the same issues found by the Indian YouTubers, including Chinese-made apps, software similarities, and hardware sourced from Sprocomm. The main website for AI+ also seemed to have fake reviews as well as lots of AI-generated slop that makes little sense.
Multiple AI+ phones, such as the Nova Flip, were identified as rebranded versions of existing Chinese hardware, like the ZTE Nubia Flip 2. The “Wearbuds” product was also linked to a Chinese company, AI Power, despite claims of Indian design patents.
Mrwhosetheboss also confronted AI+ founder Madhav Sheth in multiple video calls, but was unable to get any proper explanation.
AI+ has denied allegations and has defended its position, and continues to launch new phones to this day with the same software and hardware sourced from Sprocomm.
