Google has integrated its Gemini Spark AI assistant with Chrome, allowing it to complete web-based tasks through a user’s browser. With permission, Spark can access websites where the user is already signed in and use login information stored in Google Password Manager. Google says the feature can handle tasks such as researching flights, starting the booking process and scheduling apartment viewings.

With permission, Spark can access websites where the user is already signed in and use login information stored in Google Password Manager. Google says the feature can handle tasks such as researching flights, starting the booking process and scheduling apartment viewings.

Chrome’s new auto-browse feature allows Spark to interact with websites on the user’s behalf. The first time Spark needs to use Chrome on a device, the browser will request permission. It will then ask for confirmation before starting each web-browsing task.

When connected to a local browser, Spark can access the same logged-in websites as the user. With permission, it can also use saved login information to enter loyalty programmes and other online accounts.

Users must keep Chrome and their device running while Spark completes a task locally. In some cases, Spark may switch to a remote browser if the device becomes unavailable, although it may stop and ask the user to take control when a website requires a login.

Spark will not complete payments independently.

Instead, the assistant will return control to the user so they can review the details and finish the transaction. Google also requires confirmation before Spark carries out certain sensitive actions, including sending messages, changing data, making purchases and submitting web forms.

Google says Spark includes protections against prompt injection, which occurs when malicious instructions are hidden in websites, documents or user-generated content.

Such instructions could attempt to make an AI assistant perform unwanted actions, including exposing private data or starting financial transactions.

Google says it is developing several layers of deterministic and probabilistic defences to make these attacks more difficult. However, the company warns that Spark remains experimental and may still make mistakes or perform unexpected actions.

Chrome auto-browse is initially rolling out in the United States, with additional regions expected later.

Separately, Google has expanded Spark access to Google AI Pro subscribers in more than 160 additional countries. The assistant also works with Google Workspace services, including Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Keep and Tasks.
