Google’s free streaming service is getting a major upgrade. Google TV Freeplay now lets users choose movies and TV shows to watch on demand, rather than limiting the service to live channels.
The new library includes more than 10,000 movies and TV shows. Users can access the content directly through Google TV without installing additional streaming apps.
The on-demand selection comes through partnerships with content providers including A24 and Lionsgate. Google has added dedicated “Live TV” and “Free movies & shows” tabs, making it easier to switch between live channels and on-demand content.
Google says the new feature is starting to roll out this week. Availability is initially focused on Google TV devices in the US.
The expansion builds on Freeplay’s existing lineup of free live channels. The service passed 250 channels in December 2025 and now offers more than 300 channels, according to Google.
With the addition of on-demand content, Freeplay is moving beyond its original focus on free, ad-supported live television and giving users more control over what they watch.
