The change will apply to Android smartphones and Wear OS smartwatches. It will also affect headphones and earbuds that access Google Assistant through a connected Android phone.

Vehicles using Android Auto will also move away from Assistant because the service operating through the car interface relies on the connected phone. Gemini will take over as Google’s main voice and AI assistant across these supported devices.

Google first confirmed its plans to upgrade mobile Assistant users to Gemini in March 2025. The company said Gemini could provide more advanced assistance through natural conversations, reasoning, and generative AI features that were not available through the older service.

The September shutdown will not affect every product that currently uses Google Assistant.

Vehicles equipped with Google built-in, also known as Android Automotive, will continue supporting Google Assistant after September 4. Unlike Android Auto, these systems run directly on the vehicle rather than depending on a connected smartphone.

Google Assistant also appears safe for now on Google Home speakers, smart displays, and Google TV devices. Google has been developing separate Gemini-powered experiences for its home products, but the September 4 mobile shutdown does not cover those devices.

Google says it is committed to making the transition as smooth as possible. The company believes Gemini will provide users with a more capable and useful assistant experience as it replaces Google Assistant across its mobile ecosystem.
