Google has announced what it calls the biggest upgrade to the Search box in more than 25 years, adding deeper AI features powered by Gemini 3.5 Flash.

The company announced the update at its I/O conference, one year after the launch of AI Mode. Google said AI Mode now has more than one billion monthly users, while queries have more than doubled every quarter since launch.

Google is upgrading Search with Gemini 3.5 Flash as the new default model in AI Mode for users globally.

Google said Gemini 3.5 Flash is built for agentic tasks and coding, and is now available through the Gemini app, AI Mode in Google Search, Google Antigravity, Gemini API in Google AI Studio, Android Studio, Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, and Gemini Enterprise.

Google has redesigned the Search box so users can describe what they need in more detail.

The new Search box dynamically expands as users type longer questions. It also offers AI-powered suggestions that go beyond standard autocomplete, helping users shape their queries more clearly.

The Search box now supports several input types, including text, images, files, videos, and Chrome tabs. Google said the feature is rolling out in all countries and languages where AI Mode is available.

Google is also making it easier to move from AI Overviews into AI Mode.

Users can now ask follow-up questions directly from an AI Overview and continue into a conversational AI Mode session. Google said this experience is live worldwide across desktop and mobile.

Google is adding Search agents that can work in the background to monitor information and send updates.

The first version will focus on information agents. These agents can scan the web, including blogs, news sites, and social posts, along with real-time data for finance, shopping, and sports.

For example, users looking for an apartment can enter their exact requirements, and the agent will continue searching for matching listings. Google said information agents will launch first for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers this summer.

Google is also expanding agentic booking features in Search.

The company said users will be able to ask Search for local experiences and services by giving specific requirements. Search will then show pricing, availability, and direct links to finish booking through the provider.

In the US, Google will also be able to call businesses on behalf of users in select categories such as home repair, beauty, and pet care. These features will roll out this summer.

Google is also bringing Antigravity and Gemini 3.5 Flash’s agentic coding abilities into Search.

Search will be able to create custom generative UI, including interactive visuals, tables, graphs, and simulations, based on the user’s question. Google said these generative UI features will be available to everyone in Search this summer at no cost.

Google also plans to let users build custom mini apps inside Search, such as dashboards, planners, or fitness trackers. These custom experiences will arrive in the coming months, starting with Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the US.

Google is expanding Personal Intelligence in AI Mode to nearly 200 countries and territories across 98 languages.

The feature does not require a subscription. Users can connect Gmail and Google Photos, while Google Calendar support is coming soon. Google said users remain in control and can choose when to connect these apps.
