A family in Kasur has reportedly been freed from bonded labor at a brick kiln after a foreign humanitarian paid off a debt that had trapped four generations in forced work for nearly 140 years.
The development drew an emotional response on social media, where videos and images linked to the family’s release were widely shared. Many users said the case was a painful reminder that systems resembling modern-day slavery still continue to affect vulnerable families.
According to reports, the family had been working at the brick kiln for decades, with the original debt passing from one generation to the next. Despite years of labor, they were unable to break free because low wages, interest, and other deductions kept the amount from being cleared.
The family was reportedly helped by Erin Hutchings through Project Jubilee, an initiative aimed at securing the freedom of people trapped in bonded labor and other forms of forced work. Reports said this was the fifth family freed under the same effort.
Hutchings is known for working on human rights causes and for supporting people facing exploitation in different countries. After the debt was paid, the family was finally able to leave the kiln and begin life outside the system that had held them for generations.
The story struck a chord online, with many people calling the move an example of real humanity and action. Others said the family’s release highlighted the deep link between poverty, exploitation, and economic vulnerability.
Observers noted that bonded labor is illegal in many countries, but poor families can still become trapped in the cycle after taking loans for basic needs and then failing to repay them under exploitative conditions.
