A farmer in China’s Sichuan province accidentally cut power to an entire village for around 10 hours after attempting to transport a pig by drone.
The incident occurred in Tongjiang County when the farmer tried to fly the pig to a slaughterhouse to avoid travelling through the region’s mountainous roads.
According to local authorities, the rope suspending the pig became entangled with a high-voltage power line during the early morning flight, leaving the animal hanging in mid-air while electricity was knocked out across the village.
Power crews were dispatched to repair the damaged line, with repair costs estimated at 10,000 yuan (about $1,400).
The farmer reportedly blamed poor visibility because the flight took place before sunrise. Police launched an investigation and said the farmer is suspected of operating the drone in a restricted airspace and exceeding its permitted payload.
The incident drew widespread attention for its unusual circumstances. It also showed the increasing use of drones in rural China to transport goods, spray crops and access remote mountainous areas.
Note: Tongjiang County is a historic, nature-rich county in the northeast of Sichuan Province, China, administered by Bazhong City. Known as a revolutionary holy land and the “Hometown of White Fungus,” it spans 4,125 square kilometers and is famous for the Nuoshui River World Geopark and its deep historical roots.
