The European Commission has advised member states to exclude Chinese networking equipment from suppliers such as Huawei and ZTE from their telecom infrastructure.

The guidance, shared by a European Commission spokesperson, is not a legally binding rule. However, it signals a clear move toward restricting the use of Chinese networking equipment across the European Union.

The recommendation comes as the EU works on a new set of cybersecurity measures focused on supply chain security and product safety.

These include the Revised Cybersecurity Act (CSA 2.0), which aims to establish a framework to identify high-risk suppliers and address foreign interference in critical sectors such as telecommunications.

If adopted by member states, the measures could lead to a broader phase-out of Chinese networking equipment in 5G infrastructure.

Chinese officials have previously warned that such policies could lead to countermeasures.

They have described the EU’s approach toward Chinese vendors as discriminatory and harmful to trade and cooperation between China and Europe.
