Twitter (X) owner and Tesla CEO Elon Musk has applauded the Lahore High Court (LHC) ruling in the 2020 motorway gangrape case, praising Pakistan after the court upheld the death sentences of the two convicted men.
The response came after British politician Rupert Lowe posted about the verdict on X and described it as “some good news to come out of Pakistan.” Musk replied to the post, writing: “Bravo Pakistan! This is what we should be doing in the West”.

His comment followed a major development in one of Pakistan’s most high-profile criminal cases, as a two-member bench of the Lahore High Court dismissed the appeals of Abid Ali alias Malhi and Shafqat Ali alias Bagga.
The bench, comprising Justice Syed Shahbaz Ali Rizvi and Justice Tariq Mehmood Bajwa, maintained the death sentences earlier handed down by an anti-terrorism court. The two convicts had challenged their convictions and sentences in 2021.
The trial court had awarded them death penalties, life imprisonment, and multiple additional jail terms on March 20, 2021. In their appeals, the convicts argued that there were weaknesses in the prosecution’s case and claimed the judgement was harsh and contrary to established legal principles.
During final arguments, the state prosecutor told the court that the prosecution had presented overwhelming evidence and urged the bench to uphold the convictions and sentences. The court ultimately dismissed the appeals.
The case had triggered nationwide outrage in September 2020 after a woman of Pakistan-origin was assaulted on the Sialkot-Lahore Motorway in front of her children after her car ran out of fuel late at night.
The incident became a national flashpoint, not only because of its brutality but also due to the public reaction that followed, including criticism of official remarks made at the time.
