Novak Djokovic continued his chase for Wimbledon history after defeating Arthur Rinderknech in a hard-fought four-set contest to reach the fourth round.

The 39-year-old Serb secured his 105th Wimbledon match win, equaling Roger Federer’s tally at the tournament. Djokovic, who is also chasing Federer’s men’s record of eight Wimbledon singles titles, beat the dangerous Frenchman 7-5, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(4) on Centre Court.

The seven-time Wimbledon champion looked comfortable in the opening two sets, using his sharp shot-making, movement and trademark flexibility to keep control of the contest. The Centre Court crowd responded warmly as Djokovic produced several moments of quality on a sunny day in London.

Rinderknech, however, refused to fade away. The 30-year-old raised his level in the third set, serving with greater power and accuracy while attacking Djokovic more aggressively. He took the set 6-1 and came close to handing Djokovic his first 6-0 set loss at Wimbledon.

The Frenchman continued to push Djokovic in the fourth set, with both players involved in several thrilling rallies and even diving across the grass during an entertaining battle.

Djokovic, however, regained control at the key moment and played a flawless fourth-set tiebreak to seal the win.

After the match, Djokovic joked about drawing level with Federer’s Wimbledon win record.

“I propose a match-up between me and Roger for 106,” Djokovic said during his on-court interview after celebrating with some “dad dancing” for his laughing daughter Tara. “Let’s just stop it here and call Roger to come.”

Djokovic will next face Russian qualifier Roman Safiullin. Another victory would move him into second place alone on the all-time Wimbledon match wins list, behind only Martina Navratilova’s record of 120.

His latest win came after a dominant second-round performance against Stefanos Tsitsipas, further showing that very few players can still match Djokovic on grass.
