The Punjab government has signed a major agreement to boost livestock and meat exports, marking a significant step toward strengthening the province’s agricultural economy.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz presided over a video-link meeting where the government signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with seven institutions, including Global Meat Company. Under the agreement, Punjab aims to export one million livestock.
As part of the initiative, the Chinese company will collaborate with the Punjab Agriculture and Meat Company to install a modern boiler unit to enable large-scale production of boiled meat for export. Officials said meat companies will import meat from around 300,000 export-ready animals.
The government has also set ambitious livestock development targets, including fattening 300,000 buffaloes and cows, 300,000 sheep and goats, and raising an additional 100,000 goats and sheep specifically for export.
To support the sector, authorities will establish state-of-the-art veterinary hospitals in every tehsil and deploy four mobile veterinary dispensaries per tehsil to provide doorstep animal healthcare services.
In a move to empower rural communities, the chief minister doubled the quota of free livestock for women. The government will distribute 9,255 animals among widowed and divorced women in 12 districts of South Punjab.
Punjab will also introduce mechanisation in livestock farming, offering up to 60% subsidy on machinery. Additionally, around two million animals will be tagged to improve traceability and meet export standards.
Officials said the initiative aims to modernise livestock farming, increase exports, and create economic opportunities, particularly for rural populations.
