Chinese battery giant Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL) has unveiled a groundbreaking electric vehicle battery that can charge in just over six minutes, marking a major advancement in EV technology.

The new Shenxing battery is a lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery capable of charging from 10% to 98% in only six minutes and 27 seconds.

It can reach 80% charge in just under four minutes, significantly reducing one of the biggest barriers to electric vehicle adoption, long charging times.

CATL said the battery can charge up to 35% in less than a minute, surpassing the previous record set by BYD, which achieved a full charge in nine minutes earlier this year.

The company claims the Shenxing battery delivers consistent performance even in extreme temperatures. During tests in Arctic conditions at -30°C, the battery charged from 10% to 98% in around nine minutes.

According to CATL CEO Robin Zeng, the breakthrough was achieved by reducing internal electrical resistance to just 0.25 milliohms, the lowest in any commercial battery.

The innovation is expected to accelerate the global shift toward electric vehicles by offering charging speeds comparable to refuelling traditional petrol cars, making EVs more practical for everyday use.
