OpenAI has started rolling out GPT-5.5 Instant as the new default model for ChatGPT shortly after the release of GPT-5.5.

According to OpenAI, the updated model produces 52.5% fewer hallucinated claims during internal testing and reduces inaccurate claims by 37.3% in conversations previously flagged by users for factual errors.

OpenAI said GPT-5.5 Instant is designed to provide more direct responses while maintaining the conversational style users expect from ChatGPT.

The company also stated that the model asks fewer unnecessary follow-up questions and generates cleaner outputs with reduced emoji usage.

The updated model is also faster at searching uploaded files, connected Gmail accounts, and previous ChatGPT conversations to generate personalized replies.

According to OpenAI, these improvements should reduce the need for users to repeat information across conversations.

Alongside GPT-5.5 Instant, OpenAI introduced a new feature called memory sources. The tool is designed to show users some of the context ChatGPT may have used to personalize responses.

Users can also delete or update stored information if it is no longer relevant. OpenAI said memory sources will not appear when users share chats with others.

The company added that users remain in control of their memory settings, including the ability to delete chats from memory references, modify saved memories, or use temporary chats that do not save or access memory.

OpenAI said the current version of memory sources will not display every piece of information used in generating responses, though the company is working to expand the feature.

GPT-5.5 Instant’s personalization improvements are rolling out first to Plus and Pro subscribers. Free, Go, Business, and Enterprise users are expected to receive access in the coming weeks.

OpenAI said memory sources will arrive on web and mobile platforms for all ChatGPT users soon, while GPT-5.5 Instant deployment has already started globally.
