The Balochistan government has decided to introduce a convoy system on highways across the province to protect cargo trucks, passenger coaches and people traveling by road.
The decision was announced by Additional Chief Secretary Home Hamza Shafqaat during a meeting with representatives of the Quetta Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
The meeting focused on the worsening security situation on highways and the problems being faced by transporters, passengers and the business community.
Shafqaat said safe travel and smooth transport movement were the government’s top priority. He said the government wanted to make all highways safe and would take every possible step to improve the security situation.
As part of these efforts, officials announced that the convoy system would be launched soon for the secure movement of goods transport vehicles from the Taftan border to Quetta and other parts of the country.
The move comes after representatives of the Quetta Chamber of Commerce and Industry raised concerns over continuing attacks on cargo trucks, LPG bowsers and other vehicles on highways in the province.
They urged the government to take special measures to protect transporters, passengers and the public.
The business community also said trucks had continued to be set on fire and highway robberies had increased. They said these incidents had created fear among importers, exporters, passengers and the general public.
