Apple is preparing a major shake-up of its Mac chip lineup by skipping high-end versions of its upcoming M6 processor and fast-tracking the launch of AI-focused M7 chips, according to Bloomberg.
The company will not release M6 Pro or M6 Max variants. Instead, it plans to jump directly to M7 Pro and M7 Max processors in 2027.
The base M6 chip is expected to deliver memory bandwidth of around 200GB/s, up from roughly 153GB/s on the M5, alongside an upgraded Neural Engine, improved CPU performance, faster media processing, and a redesigned GPU with up to 12 graphics cores.
Apple is also developing the M7 family around AI tech. The base M7 chip is expected to launch as early as the first half of 2027, while M7 Pro, M7 Max, and M7 Ultra models are currently targeted for 2027-28.
Apple still plans to launch the M5 Ultra later this year with a refreshed Mac Studio. The flagship chip is expected to feature around 36 CPU cores, 80 GPU cores, and support up to 768GB of unified memory, although ongoing supply constraints could affect final configurations.
