Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi visited Dera Ismail Khan International Airport on Friday to review progress on efforts aimed at restoring flight operations at the facility, which has remained closed since 2015.

During the visit, officials from the Pakistan Airports Authority briefed the governor on rehabilitation work and the airport’s operational status.

Speaking to reporters, Kundi said runway carpeting had been completed and the remaining work would be finalized soon to make the airport ready for operations. He stressed the need to address shortages of equipment and staff, adding that safety assessments and audits must be completed before commercial flights can resume.

The governor expressed hope that commercial operations would be restored soon and said discussions would be held with South Air regarding potential flights to Dera Ismail Khan and Chitral. He added that other private airlines would also be encouraged to launch services in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Kundi also shared details of the proposed Green Field International Airport project, saying the facility would be developed on more than 1,700 acres and would have the capacity to handle over one million passengers annually.

He said a site near Yarik in Dera Ismail Khan remained the preferred location for the new airport, describing it as the most suitable option for the wider region.

Separately, the governor announced that work on the dualization of the N-55 Dera-Paroa Road would begin soon, stating that the tendering process for the project had already been completed.
