Adobe is rolling out a major AI-focused update to Photoshop, including a new optional interface that brings the software’s most popular generative AI tools into one place.
Called AI Assisted Editor, the new interface is launching in beta and is designed for users who prefer natural-language commands and simplified controls instead of Photoshop’s traditional editing workflow.
The dedicated interface includes Prompt to Edit, Remove Background, Generative Expand, Remove Tool, Generative Fill, Generative Upscale, and AI Markup.
Prompt to Edit allows users to describe changes using everyday language. The generated changes appear as separate generative layers, keeping the original image intact and allowing further adjustments.
Users who prefer Photoshop’s regular interface can continue using the existing Pro Editor. Prompt to Edit will also be available directly through its Contextual Task Bar.
One of the biggest additions is AI Markup, which lets users draw directly over an image to explain what they want changed.
For example, users can circle an area that needs a different color, draw an arrow showing where an object should move, or sketch a rough shape where they want Photoshop to create something new.
This gives the AI visual instructions rather than forcing users to explain every change through text alone.
Adobe is also upgrading Instruct Edit with Masks using its Firefly Image 5 model.
Photoshop can now understand more of the overall image context, reducing the need to precisely select every part that needs editing. A user could simply request that Photoshop open someone’s closed eyes or put a hat on a specific person, while areas outside the mask remain unchanged.
The update also introduces a new non-destructive Light Adjustment Layer for controlling exposure, contrast, highlights, shadows, whites, and blacks without leaving the normal Photoshop layer workflow.
Adobe is additionally bringing more than 900 million Adobe Stock assets directly into Photoshop through a new dockable Stock panel.
The new AI-Assisted Editor is optional, meaning Adobe is not replacing Photoshop’s existing professional interface. Users can instead choose between traditional editing tools, AI-driven workflows, or a combination of both.
